      CYCLADES

The sea at Mykonos: what to know

The forecast on this page is for a sea point off Mykonos (37.45° N, 25.30° E), in the Cyclades. Values come from the Open-Meteo forecast and marine models (MET Norway as backup) and are updated several times a day.

More about the sea at Mykonos: wind, traffic, how to read the numbers

Mykonos lies right in the path of the meltemi. In July and August north winds of 20–30 kn can blow for days, with steep short waves in the strait between Mykonos and Tinos. The south coast is more sheltered, the north coast fully exposed.

Ferries call at the new port (Tourlos) and cruise ships anchor off the town in summer. Small boats should keep clear of the ferry approach.

How to read the numbers: wind up to about 10 knots and waves under 0.5 m are usually comfortable for a small boat or SUP near the coast. Waves from 1 m and gusts above 22 knots are already serious for boats under 6 m. The rating follows the boat profile you choose.

      Questions and answers

How big are the waves at Mykonos today?

The current significant wave height in metres and its period are in the “Now” block at the top, and hour by hour in the 48-hour chart. Values come from the Open-Meteo marine model.

What is the sea temperature at Mykonos?

We show the model sea-surface temperature at a point offshore. Close to the beach the water can differ by 1–2 °C, especially after a strong wind.

When is it dangerous to go out by boat at Mykonos?

With the default small-boat profile, gusts above 22 knots or waves above 1 m give “Not recommended”. Always check the official HNMS forecast, the official warnings and any sailing ban of the Coast Guard before going out.
